PCS, TDY and military moves
Orders move faster than vehicles do. A practical guide to covering the stretch between handing over one car and getting the next one.

A move rarely leaves you carless all at once. It leaves you carless in a specific, awkward window — the fortnight after your vehicle goes onto a transporter, the ten days before the next one clears, the stretch of a TDY where flying in makes sense and being stranded at the other end does not. Nobody plans for that window, because it is not on the orders. It is the thing that happens around them.
This is a practical guide to covering it. It is written for the San Antonio end of the move specifically — what we can put on the road for you here, what we need from you before we can, and the handful of decisions that are much easier made a week out than on the day.
People arrive at this from three different directions, and the right answer is different for each. Working out which one you are in is most of the decision.
This is the longest of the three and the one where the arrangement matters most, because you are not renting for a trip — you are renting for daily life. School runs, commissary, getting to work at an hour that does not suit anybody else's schedule. What you want here is a vehicle you can keep without renegotiating it every few days, and a hand-over that does not cost you an afternoon.
Shorter, sharper, and the constraint is the arrival rather than the length. You land, you need to be mobile immediately, and you have bags. The decision that matters is where the vehicle meets you, and it is worth making before you fly rather than at the kerb with a phone in one hand.
The shortest, and the one where people most often over-think the vehicle and under-think the return. A trip that ends with an early flight is a trip where the hour the vehicle goes back is the thing to settle first, not last.
The requirements are the same whether you are renting for four days or four weeks, and they are the same for service members as for anybody else — we do not ask you to prove service, and there is nothing to bring on that front. A military ID is welcome as photo identification; it is not a requirement and it does not stand in for a licence.
This is the part that is genuinely awkward about renting mid-move: the usual answer is "come and collect it", and the reason you are renting is that you have no way of getting anywhere. So there are four ways to do the hand-over and three of them have a fixed figure.
Worth being precise about the third one, because it is the one people ask about most: that figure covers bringing the vehicle out to the Lackland, Randolph and Fort Sam Houston community and collecting it again. Where exactly the hand-over happens — a gate, a car park, an address just off the installation — is something we agree with you when you book. A price for a trip is not a claim about where the trip ends.
Earlier than feels necessary, for one unglamorous reason: the two fixed hand-overs — the airport garage and the on-base round trip — both need 24 hours' notice. That is not a booking cutoff and it is not a rule about how far ahead you can rent. It is the notice those two specific arrangements need, and it is the thing most likely to turn a plan into a phone call on the day.
The other reason is that a move has a lot of moving parts and this is one of the few you can nail down early. If the dates shift — and on a move they shift — ring us and we will move the booking with them. Changes run on what is actually free at the time, and moving the dates or the class can move the price, so we requote it with you rather than surprising you afterwards.
The vehicle gap is the one part of a move nobody puts on a checklist, and the one that ruins a week when it is left to the day.
The return is agreed while you are booking, including when it falls outside our opening hours — we are open Monday to Friday 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, and an after-hours drop-off is available on request. It does not have to go back the way it came out, either: a delivery can be collected and a collection can be dropped. It does have to be agreed in advance rather than decided on the day.
If your vehicle clears earlier than expected, tell us. If it clears later — which is more common — tell us that too. Neither is a problem while it is a conversation.
