Travel Nurse Car Rental in San Antonio: A Guide for Your Contract

Thirteen weeks, a new city and twelve-hour shifts. How to set up a rental car that lasts the contract, from landing at SAT to the flight home.

A travel contract hands you a new city, a new unit and a schedule built around twelve-hour shifts, usually with a few weeks' notice and a flight to get there. What it does not hand you is a way to get to work. If you drove your own car to the assignment, that is solved. If you flew in, it is the first thing to sort out, and it is far easier sorted before you land than after your first shift.

This guide is about travel nurse car rental in San Antonio: whether you need a car for the contract at all, how to get it when you land at SAT, what to have on you at the hand-over, how your own insurance fits in, and how to plan the car around shifts, extensions and the flight home. It is written for travel nurses and allied health travellers on a contract here, and it works just as well for anybody in the city on a job measured in weeks.

Start with your contract, then book the car

Your contract decides most of what follows: the start date, the length, the shift pattern, and whether orientation runs before your first shift. Whether your agency puts anything toward travel or a vehicle is between you and your recruiter — not us, and not this guide. Settle the dates first, because they are what the flights, the housing and the car are all booked against.

Do you need a rental car for a travel nurse contract in San Antonio?

If your own car came with you, no — and nothing below applies until it breaks down. If you flew in, the honest answer is usually yes, for reasons that have more to do with the shape of the job than with the city:

  • Shift change does not wait. A twelve-hour shift starts and ends at hours that suit the unit, not at hours that suit a ride you have to book and then wait for — and after a long shift, standing at the kerb is the last thing you want.
  • A contract is long. Most travel contracts run around thirteen weeks, and an arrangement that is fine for a weekend turns into a lot of waiting when it is the only way you get anywhere for three months.
  • Days off are the point. Three long shifts a week leaves four days without one, and most of what makes a contract worth taking happens on them: the groceries, the errands, the rest of the city.
  • Housing is not always next door. Furnished rentals and extended-stay hotels are wherever they are, and the commute from yours is something you live with for the whole contract.

Getting the car when you land at SAT

Most travel contracts start with a flight, and the hand-over that matters is the one waiting when you land. There are three ways to get the car, and two of them cost nothing:

  • SAT airport — free, both ways. We meet you at the San Antonio International Airport long-term parking garage and take the car back there when you fly out. It needs 24 hours' notice, and there is no airport surcharge.
  • Delivery to where you are staying — a furnished rental or an extended-stay hotel — quoted with your booking, worked out from distance and the pickup time. You get the figure before you commit.
  • Our office, inside opening hours — free. It suits a contract where somebody already here can bring you to collect it.

The meet point at SAT is the long-term parking garage, not the kerb at arrivals, and we send the details with your booking. Because that hand-over needs 24 hours' notice, book the car on the day you book the flight, not the week you travel.

What to have on you at the hand-over

You keep a compliance file for every assignment. This is the short version for the car, and it goes in the carry-on rather than the checked bag:

  • A current driver's licence, for you and for anybody else who will drive. Every driver goes on the agreement before they take the wheel.
  • Proof you are 21 or over — the licence usually covers it. From 21 to 24 a young renter fee of $20 a day applies, quoted with the booking rather than added at the hand-over.
  • Verifiable comprehensive and collision coverage that transfers to a rental vehicle. If you do not have it, there is an answer in the next section.
  • A card in your own name, for the refundable deposit of $250 to $400. The amount depends on the vehicle, and it is released once the car is back with us in good order.

The card is the one that catches people out. It has to be in the renter's own name, so a card belonging to somebody else — a partner or a parent, even one who is happy to pay — will not do. Decide who the renter is before you book, and put their card on the booking.

Car insurance when your own car is back home

This is the part of a contract people think about least, and the one most likely to stop a hand-over. We need verifiable comprehensive and collision coverage that transfers to a rental vehicle, and travellers tend to arrive in one of three positions:

  • Your car is parked at home and still fully insured. Your policy may well extend to a rental, but check exactly how, and whether it still covers you while you live and work in another state for months.
  • Your policy is liability-only, or you cut it back while the car sits unused. Liability on its own does not meet the requirement.
  • You do not own a car, or you let the policy lapse between contracts. Then there is nothing to transfer.

For the second and third, CDW and SLI cover is offered when you reserve, so it is a choice you make at booking rather than a problem you find at the kerb. For the first, ring your insurer before you fly and ask four things:

  • Does my policy extend to a rental car, and does that include comprehensive and collision, not just liability?
  • Does it still apply while I am living and working in another state on a contract?
  • Is there a limit on how many days in a row it will cover a rental?
  • Can you send me the details in writing, so the cover can be verified?

We cannot tell you what your policy covers, and anybody who does without reading it is guessing. Those four answers tell you whether to bring your own cover or choose it when you reserve.

Plan the car around twelve-hour shifts

We are open Monday to Friday 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Closed Sunday. A hospital runs around the clock, so put your shift pattern next to those hours before you book. A hand-over is easy to fit around a day off and awkward to fit around a run of nights.

Last shiftPack, clear out the car and check the flight home. The return is planned around the flight. The car can go back at the SAT garage on the way, as long as that is agreed ahead.

Your first week behind the wheel

  • Drive to the hospital at the hour you will drive it, before orientation, so your first real commute is the second time you have made it.
  • Ask the facility how staff parking works and whether it needs a plate on file. If it does, the plate to register is the rental's.
  • Keep the rental agreement and your insurance details on your phone, next to the rest of your compliance documents.

Book the car for the contract, not the week

A travel contract is a fixed term, which makes the car simple to book. Tell us your start and end dates, roughly how you will use it, and what has to fit. The vehicle, the deposit, the mileage terms for your vehicle and your dates, and any delivery are settled with you before anything is reserved.

Be honest about the driving. A commute three times a week, the errands, and a few long days out on your days off cover more ground over a contract than most people guess at the start. The mileage terms are an easy conversation before the keys change hands and a harder one after.

Book the car against your contract dates, and call us the day an extension is offered — not the day the term runs out.

Extensions, early ends and the last shift

If the contract is extended

An extension is the normal way a good contract goes. Tell us as soon as one is offered and we requote the rental against the new end date, rather than letting it roll into a term you never agreed to.

If it ends early

Contracts are sometimes cut short, for reasons nobody on the unit chose. Call us as soon as you know and we will work through what the booking can do. Cancellation before pickup runs on fixed windows, and they are set out in full on the requirements page rather than summarised here.

Handing it back

The return is planned around your flight home, and the car does not have to go back where it came from: a car delivered to your housing can be handed back at the SAT garage on the way to the airport, as long as that is agreed ahead. An after-hours drop-off is available on request, and the deposit is released once the car is back with us in good order.
